Belen or Nativity (as it is called here) is a representation of the birth decorating homes during the holidays and that is part of the Christmas liturgy in many parts of the world of Catholic tradition. As you know, every country has its unique characters and we were not going to be less!

The Caganer is the funniest character typical Catalan. Normally tucked away in a corner, behind a bush, and is the figure of a man crouching barretina doing his «needs». Yes, you heard right: shitting! Though not exactly known what is the reason for placing this figure, it is believed that their feces caganer fertilizes the Earth, so that in our culture is considered a symbol of prosperity and good luck for the coming year. Over the years it has been modernized and although there is always the classic figure we can find ‘Caganers’ Barça, politicians and even the Royal Family!

Interestingly, the caganer is not the only typically Catalan Christmas character that defecates (!) There is another tradition that also feels the same: the Tió.

The Tió is a mythology Catalan ‘character’ related to the Christmas tree tradition common in many other countries. This is a log with beret and a very smiling face cap usually with a blanket not to get cold at night. We begin to ‘feed’ every night in early December and every morning it magically over all … feed him until Christmas Eve, when then Tió, beaten with sticks by children and kept a traditional ritual chants, «pooped» baubles, nougat wafers for Christmas lunch.

So AltiroBarcelona friends, do not be surprised if you see in Barcelona logs with red hats or figurines with rear in the air;-)! Merry Christmas friends

La Navidad y otras histórias…

Belén o Pesebre (como se le llama aquí) es a la representación del nacimiento que adorna los hogares durante las fiestas y que forma parte de la liturgia navideña en muchas partes del mundo de tradición católica. Como bien sabéis, cada país tiene sus personajes singulares y nosotros no ibamos a ser menos!

El Caganer es un personaje de lo más divertido típico catalán. Normalmente está escondido en un rincón, detrás de un arbusto, y es la figura de un hombre con barretina agachado haciendo sus «necesidades». Si, como lo oyes: Cagando! Aunque no se conoce con exactitud cual es la razón para colocar esta figura, se cree que el caganer con sus heces fertiliza la Tierra, por lo que en nuestra cultura se le considera un símbolo de prosperidad y buena suerte para el año siguiente. Con los años se ha ido modernizando la versión y aunque siempre está la figura clásica también podemos encontrar ‘Caganers’ del Barça, políticos e incluso de la Familia Real!

Curiosamente, el caganer no es el único personaje navideño típicamente catalán que defeca(!) Existe otra tradición a la que también le pasa lo mismo: el Tió.

El Tió es un ‘personaje’ mitológico catalán emparentado con la tradición del árbol de Navidad común en muchos otros países. Se trata de un tronco con barretina y cara muy sonriente que se tapa normalmente con una manta para que no pase frío las duras noches de diciembre. Se le empieza a ‘dar de comer’ cada noche a principios de diciembre y cada mañana magicamente se lo ha terminado todo…  Se le alimenta hasta la Nochebuena, cuando entonces el Tió, golpeado con bastones por los niños y conservado todo un ritual de cánticos muy tradicional «cagará» las chucherías, barquillos y turrones de la comida de Navidad.

Así que amigos de AltiroBarcelona, no os extrañéis si por Barcelona veis troncos con sombreros rojos o figuritas con el trasero al aire;-)! Feliz Navidad amigos
