LA CASTANYADA

The Castanyada is a Catalan festival celebrated on November 1 All Saints Day, and as Halloween, comes from an ancient ritual funeral feast. The feast is a meal where you eat chestnuts, panellets, and sweet candied fruit.

During this period is usually found in the street stalls selling cooked chestnuts and sweet potatoes (in Las Ramblas or Urquinaona Pl you can find!). And in bakeries and pastry shops you can buy the typical sweets of this celebration: The Panellets, marzipan of different flavors, even that the most traditional one is the pine nuts.

The figure of a chestnut is the symbol of this tradition: an old woman, dressed in rags and a headscarf in front of a stove where she cook chestnuts

PANELLETS

500 grs. almonds, 400 grs. sugar, 250 grs. cooked sweet potato, 200 grs. pine, 1 egg

Boil the whole sweet potato whit the skin until tender, hot, peel and put in a dish and crushed with a fork and add the sugar, mixed and added slowly ground almonds, finish to mix the dough with your hands so the almond is mix with the dough.

Pine nuts: Made balls with the dough, passed by beaten egg and then by the pine nuts (tighten well for sticking pine nuts), after paint the balls with egg yolks. Bake in a 250°C oven for 10 minutes.

HALLOWEEN

Halloween comes to town on October 31st.
Halloween is the time to wear costumes with masks or be dressed as ghosts, zombies, witches and more. In Barcelona you can find different stores to rent or buy props. Although the modern Halloween is based on U.S. traditions. it is increasingly common to be held in a large number of bars and clubs of Barcelona.

To celebrate the event we propose the Music Hall Barcelona, ​​a concert hall located a few meters from Plaza Catalunya, on October 30st they celebrate Halloween with a special show: Evil Dead 2 and “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”

What is the pass? The audience sings, dances, shouts, insults to the good, the bad applaud, throw rice at weddings, and get wet when it rains during the two hours of the show. The border between the screen and the theatre is blurry, you laugh at the blockbusters in 3D! Double session that will make you tremble with fear or laughter, and will depart costume competition with premiums.

Producers, distributors and exhibitors are launching a new initiative after success of «Film Party». From 15th January to 15 April 360 cinemas in all Spain will do «Miercoles de Cine» it means that all Wednesday you can go to the cinema for only 3,90€.

Sala Montjuïc es una Muestra de Cine al aire libre que llena de buen cine las noches de verano en la montaña de Montjuïc. Este año llega a su 10ª edición y para celebrarlo presenta una programación especial llena de novedades.

Se celebrará del 29 de junio hasta el 8 de agosto y, como cada año, tendrá lugar en el marco incomparable del Foso de Santa Eulalia del Castillo de Montjuïc de Barcelona. 18 noches de cine con sesiones cada lunes, miércoles y viernes durante las 6 semanas de duración de la muestra. Cada sesión incluye un concierto, un cortometraje y una película proyectados en 35mm en pantalla gigante de cine y en versión original subtitulada.

Sala Montjuïc este año arranca con una inauguración muy especial, el viernes 29 de junio con la proyección del premiado film de animación «Chico & Rita«, presentado por sus creadores Fernando Trueba y Javier Mariscal. Este último, además, ha sido el artista a quien se le ha encargado la campaña gráfica de Sala Montjuïc 2012.

Dentro la cartelera encontramos títulos recientes como el western ‘Valor de Ley» de los hermanos Coen, la oscarizada «El discurso del rey» de Tom Hooper o «Origen» de Christopher Nolan, una de las mayores obras de cine fantástico de nuestros tiempos. La presencia de cine europeo vendrá de la mano de Guillaume Canet y su último film “Pequeñas mentiras sin importancia«, “En un mundo mejor” de Susanne Bier (Óscar a la mejor película extranjera en el 2010) y «Exit through the gift shop«, un documental polémico sobre el arte urbano de la mano del misterioso artista Banksy. Otro título contundente será la canadiense “Incendies” de Denis Villenueve, adaptación cinematográfica de una obra teatral que también ha llevado Oriol Broggi al Teatro Romea este año. El cine asiático estará representado este año por la bonita y honesta película “Poesía” de Lee Chang_dong.

Tres novedades más de este año son la «Noche Phenomena» con una doble sesión con presentación de dos películas de los años 80, la «Noche especial Familiar» donde se proyectará la película de animación ‘UP‘, junta a una propuesta participativa de interacción con el público familiar, y una tercera noche especial con el Cine-concierto «Keatoniana», un espectáculo de Jordi Sabatés musicando un filme de Buster Keaton.

Sala Montjuïc se ha convertido ya en un clásico de las noches de verano en la ciudad, un evento que mucha gente espera y que en cierta manera es un orgullo por los ciudadanos de Barcelona. Sala Montjuïc Film Festival is an outdoor cinema full of good summer nights on the mountain of Montjuïc. This year marks the 10th edition and to celebrate presents a special program full of new features.

Be held from June 29th to August 8th and, as every year, will take place in the magnificent setting of Santa Eulalia Ditch in Montjuïc Castle in Barcelona. 18 nights of film with sessions every Monday, Wednesday and Friday during the 6-week sample. Each session includes a concert, a short film and a film projected on a giant screen 35mm film and the original version with subtitles.

Sala Montjuïc this year starts with a special opening on Friday June 29th with the screening of the award winning animation film «Chico & Rita«, presented by their creators Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal. The latter has also been the artist who has been charged with the advertising campaign of Montjuïc Room 2012.

Inside the programme we find recent titles like the western «True Grit» of the brothers Coen, the Oscar-winning «The King’s Speech» by Tom Hooper and «Origin» by Christopher Nolan, one of the greatest works of fantasy films of our time. The presence of European cinema is in the hands of Guillaume Canet and his latest film «Little Lies unimportant«, «In a Better World» by Susanne Bier (Oscar for best foreign film in 2010) and «Exit Through the gift shop«, a controversial documentary on street art from the hand of mysterious artist Banksy. Another strong title is the Canadian «Incendies» by Denis Villeneuve, film adaptation of a play which has also led to the Teatro Romea by Oriol Broggi this year. Asian cinema will be represented this year by the beautiful and honest film «Poetry» by Lee Chang_dong.

Three novelties this year are the «Night Phenomena» with a double session with presentation of two films of the 80s, the «special Family Night» where they screened the animated film «UP«, together with a participatory approach to interaction with the family audience, and a third special night with the Cine-concert «Keatoniana», a show of Jordi Sabatés interpreting a film by Buster Keaton.

Sala Montjuïc has already become a classic summer nights in the city, an event that many people expect and that somehow is a pride for the citizens of Barcelona. Chico & Rita el filme de Fernando Trueba y Javier Mariscal no para de dar que hablar, después de cosechar premios por multitud de festivales ha sido nominada a los Oscar 2012 de Hollywood en el apartado de Mejor Película de Animación, que se celebra el próximo 26 de febrero en Los Ángeles.

Según Javier Mariscal, nuestro diseñador gráfico más internacional y coautor del filme, Chico & Rita es una película de animación para adultos que narra una «historia de amor» entre dos personas, «pero también entre La Habana y Nueva York» en el marco de la Revolución cubana, justo en un momento en el que «los ritmos cubanos coparon las salas de fiestas de Estados Unidos».

Con la música de artistas como Bebo Valdés y Estrella Morente, Chico & Rita cuenta la historia de un pianista y una cantante que viven una destructiva relación sentimental, en un proyecto que ha llevado siete años al director de Belle Epoque y al creador del Cobi (la mascota de Barcelona’92).

En 1992, Fernando Trueba ya fue el primer español en ganar la codiciada estatuilla en la categoría de Mejor Película de habla no inglesa con Belle Époque, un retrato divertido y surrealista de la Guerra Civil española con una jovencísima Penelope Cruz. Esperamos que Chico & Rita tenga la misma suerte!! Musical? Animación? Simplemente una historia de amor y una maravilla para gozar del cine.

Chico & Rita’s film director Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal not stop to talk, after reaping awards for many festivals has been nominated for the Oscar 2012 in Hollywood in the category of Best Animated Film, held on February 26th in Los Angeles.

According to Javier Mariscal, our more international graphic designer and co-author of the film, Chico & Rita is an adult animated film that tells a «love story» between two people, «but also between Havana and New York» in the context of the Cuban Revolution, just at a time when «Cuban rhythms night clubs took a clean sweep of the United States.»

With music from artists such as Bebo Valdés and Estrella Morente, Chico & Rita tells the story of a pianist and a singer living a destructive relationship, on a project that has taken seven years to the director of Belle Epoque and the creator of Cobi (the mascot of Barcelona ’92).

In 1992, Fernando Trueba, was the first Spanish man to win the coveted statuette for Best Foreign Language Film with Belle Époque, a funny and surreal portrait of the Spanish Civil War with a very young Penelope Cruz. We hope to have the same luck with Chico & Rita!
